New provincial budget cut means fewer Nova Scotia books!
This year’s provincial budget cancels funding to Nova Scotia book publishers.
That means there will be far fewer Nova Scotia books on shelves in bookstores. It also means that Nova Scotia will be the only province that does not fund its local book publishers.
You can take action. Find your local MLA on this list and send a letter or email telling them why Nova Scotia books matter.

Subject line: Opposition to the proposed elimination of the Publishers Assistance Fund
Dear [MLA’S NAME],
I am writing in support of the Nova Scotia Publishers whose investment fund has been eliminated in the upcoming budget. The $700,000 included in that fund is vital to the success and growth of Nova Scotia’s book industry.
I recognize the need for responsible fiscal management in the province, but I also would like to note the economic and cultural benefits which a growing book publishing industry can generate with its small annual investment. The unique strength of book publishing is its continuing success at achieving substantial revenues from domestic and export sales, its stability over the long term as cultural organizations and employers, and the appeal of the books from NS creators across our borders and here at home.
Every other province in Canada invests in their stories through assistance to its publishers. Government investment is the only way publishers in Canada are able to be sustainable.
I stand with NS publishers in asking you to DEFEND, not DEFUND, NS books.
I request that this letter be read into Hansard.
